Glossary
Key terms used throughout Boulder Roller.
Boulder
Metaphor for the effort itself - the weight you push. In the protocol, "boulder" refers to the accumulated difficulty of climbs you've completed.
CAL (Planned)
A planned protocol token intended to represent effort and power staking mechanics post-launch. Not live in pre-alpha.
Climb Pattern
The most common pattern type. A verified record of ascending a geographic feature with significant elevation gain and sustained gradient.
Beetle Card
Your on-chain identity in Boulder Roller. Three card types track your effort:
- Climb Card — Tracks vertical meters scored (per-arena)
- Steady Card — Tracks minutes of sustained effort (global)
- Exploration Card — Tracks tiles discovered (global)
Cards level up based on effort thresholds. Higher levels unlock cosmetic upgrades post-launch.
Difficulty Score
A composite rating (relative scale) that measures how challenging a climb pattern is. Calculated from elevation gain, average gradient, maximum gradient, and distance.
DUNG (Planned)
A planned protocol token intended to reward verified effort and power protocol utilities post-launch. Not live in pre-alpha.
Effort Record
A verified record that you completed a climb pattern. Stored off-chain during pre-alpha; on-chain attestations are planned for later.
First Roller
The wallet or account that first registered a climb pattern by completing it. First rollers receive bonus attribution.
Points
Pre-alpha rewards used to track effort. Points are not transferable and have no stated monetary value.
Pattern
A verified record of effort on a specific geographic or physiological feature. Boulder Roller detects three pattern types: Climb (vertical gain), Steady (sustained aerobic effort), and Exploration (new territory).
Proof of Effort
The planned on-chain attestation of an effort record. Pre-alpha uses off-chain records while the system is being validated.
Roll
The act of completing a pattern. Also used as a noun - "my rolls" refers to patterns you've completed.
Roller
A user who completes patterns and earns points in pre-alpha.
Soigneur
French cycling term for "caretaker." The elected curator of a vault who earns 3% of epoch distributions. One seat per vault, elected by most completions over an 8-epoch (~56 day) term. No stake required - purely merit-based.
Steady Pattern
A pattern type representing sustained Zone 2-3 aerobic effort (20+ minutes). Scored by duration and intensity. One per ride maximum. See Patterns.
Exploration Pattern
A pattern type representing new tile discovery. Scored by unique tiles visited, with bonus for globally new tiles. One per ride maximum. See Patterns.
Stake
To commit points (pre-alpha) or tokens (post-launch) to a vault. Stakers earn 27% of vault epoch distributions, pro-rata by stake. Live in pre-alpha using points.
Staker
A user who stakes on vaults. Stakers earn a share of epoch distributions. Live in pre-alpha using points.
Vault
The on-chain wrapper for a climb pattern with staking economics. Vaults accumulate value from riders who complete them and distribute rewards each epoch to leaderboard, stakers, and Soigneur.
Wallet
A crypto wallet address used for identity and future token ownership. You may be asked to connect one during pre-alpha.
