Glossary
Key terms used throughout Boulder Roller.
Boulder
Metaphor for the effort itself—the weight you push. In the Sisyphean mythology, the boulder is what gives the roll meaning. In the protocol, "boulder" sometimes refers to the accumulated difficulty of patterns you've conquered.
CAL (Calorie)
The governance and staking token of Boulder Roller. CAL is staked on patterns to increase their reward multipliers and earn a share of DUNG generated. CAL holders also vote on protocol governance.
Climb Pattern
The most common pattern type. A verified record of ascending a geographic feature with significant elevation gain and sustained gradient. See Patterns.
Difficulty Score
A composite rating (1-10) that measures how challenging a pattern is. Calculated from elevation gain, average gradient, maximum gradient, and distance. Higher difficulty = higher DUNG rewards.
DUNG
The reward token of Boulder Roller. Earned by rolling patterns. Named after the dung beetle's cargo. See The Two Tokens.
Effort Hash
A cryptographic hash generated from your ride data within a pattern's boundaries. Used to create verifiable proofs of effort without storing your full GPS track.
First Roller
The wallet that first registered a pattern by completing it. First rollers receive bonus rewards and permanent on-chain attribution as the pattern's discoverer.
Pattern
A verified record of effort on a specific geographic or physiological feature. Patterns are the core primitive of Boulder Roller. See Patterns.
Pattern Engine
The system that analyzes uploaded rides to detect qualifying efforts. Uses tile-based spatial indexing, elevation profiling, and gradient analysis.
Proof of Effort
A cryptographic attestation that you completed physical work (rolled a pattern). Stored on-chain as an immutable record. See Proof of Effort.
Roll
The act of completing a pattern. When you climb a hill that matches a registered pattern, you "roll" that pattern. Also used as a noun—"my rolls" = patterns you've completed.
Roller
A user who earns DUNG by completing patterns. The physical effort contributor in the protocol's economy.
Stake
To lock CAL tokens on a pattern. Staking increases the pattern's reward multiplier and entitles you to a share of DUNG earned by rollers on that pattern.
Staker
A user who stakes CAL on patterns. Stakers earn passive DUNG from patterns they've supported, proportional to their stake.
Tile
A spatial grid cell used by the pattern engine for geographic indexing. Rides are mapped onto tiles to efficiently match against known patterns.
VAM
VelocitĂ Ascensionale Media (Average Ascent Speed). A cycling metric measuring vertical meters gained per hour. Used in difficulty calculations for climb patterns.
Wallet
Your Solana wallet address. Holds your verified patterns, CAL, DUNG, and serves as your identity in the protocol. Recommended: Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack.
